If you'd like to be a part of some very worthwhile and appreciated service projects, come to a community-service workshop!
We have recently changed our method of supplying dog beds and cat mats to the Manatee County Humane Society. Instead of attending monthly workshops, members are asked to take dog bed covers home from the meetings, fill them with scraps of fabric and batting, and return them to the Community Service table at Guild meetings when they're full. (Written instructions regarding suitable "stuffing" are available.) They will then be delivered to the Humane Society. Cat mat kits are pre-cut and usually available at meetings - also at the Community Service table. Easy to do - sew the two layers together, no batting needed. If you have a Serger, just serge around the edges. Dog beds and cat mats are offered to those adopting pets, and there is always a need. Donations of fabric for dog bed covers - denim, corduroy, home dec fabrics - are always welcome and should be large enough to make a cover about the size of a standard pillowcase.
